In recent years, the global conversation aout the potential effects of mercury in amalgam dental fillings has grown louder. With several studies pointing to potential problems caused by exposure to this filling material, even the American Dental Association has begun to advise amalgam only for patients over the age of six. In the office of Dr. Robert Sexauer and Dr. Krystal Gillis, patients do not have to worry about the risks of amalgam. Our holistic philosophy is to avoid the use of potentially harmful materials. When repairing teeth of any patient, regardless of age, we use materials such as composite resin.

The risks of amalgam

  • Mercury may be a natural substance, but it is the most toxic of all non-radioactive elements found on earth. Once used in a number of household products, mercury is now banned in several countries due to its classification as a neurotoxin. Though dental amalgam contains multiple substances such as tin and nickel, mercury comprises fifty percent of every filling.

  • Mercury escapes from dental fillings when they are warmed, as occurs when we chew. From the mouth, vapors travel through the blood, lungs, and lymph system to various organs.

  • Studies have found that mercury is associated with numerous diseases and conditions, such as depression, lowered immunity, heart disease, tremors, chronic fatigue, and Alzheimer’s.

A healthier solution

Today, there is no need to rely on the perceived safety of amalgam dental fillings when there are healthier options available. In our holistic dental practice, we may suggest high noble gold for some repairs. In most cases, tooth damage can be repaired with composite resin.

There are several benefits to metal-free fillings, the most obvious being appearance. Composite resin fillings have become widely popular due to their tooth-colored appearance. By repairing teeth with this material, no one will be able to tell that you have had dental work. An advantage of metal free fillings not immediately recognized is their durability. Many adults who have old amalgam fillings require further repair due to fractures, which occur because of expansion of the metal within the tooth. Composite fillings expand with heat at approximately the same rate as enamel, making them a more durable option. Obviously, a key benefit to composite resin fillings is the elimination of mercury exposure.

Dr. Sexauer and Dr. Gillis believe in guarding their patients’ oral and systemic health. To experience the benefits of holistic dental care, call (660) 885-6933.
